We will have the real privilege to enjoy a talk from one of the giants in urology - Prof Philip Hanno. He will take us through a journey in time on the “History of Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome - from 1917 to the present”.
Prof Hanno will take us through the various stages over the past hundred years when the complex and elusive disease has been varyingly described and categorised, and how the diagnostic criteria have changed. The talk promises to remind and update us on the controversies and current understanding in this complex field of pelvic pain.
Our dynamic Steering Goup members - Tatiana Semedo from Portugal and Kazibe Koyuncu from Turkey will jointly co-host the session.

Dr. Bert Messelink is a urologist and from the start of his working life in urology, He was interested in functional problems. He had the opportunity to chair the foundation that developed the multidisciplinary approach to pelvic floor problems. That was more than 25 years ago and it is great to see that this approach has become the golden standard. Later on, Dr.Bert Messelink met other care professionals dealing with pelvic pain and joined them in their activities. Pelvic pain is a special form of pain because it is related to private functions like peeing, pooping, period and having sex. Therefore he studied sexology and became a certified sexologist which helps him in discussing these functions but also the cognitive and behavioural aspects of pelvic pain. Dr. Bert Messelink is one of the editors of the book Abdominal and Pelvic Pain, based on the first World Congress on Abdominal and Pelvic Pain (2013). He have been involved in the European Association of Urology Guidelines on Chronic Pelvic Pain for 20 years, partly as vice-chairman.
