Call for Writing Group Members for Joint Terminology Report on Urinary Tract Infections

INTERNATIONAL UROGYNECOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION (IUGA)/ AMERICAN UROGYNECOLOGIC SOCIETY (AUGS)/ JOINT TERMINOLOGY REPORT ON URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS IN WOMEN

We are seeking 4-5 volunteers to serve on a writing group to help establish standardized terminology for urinary tract infections (UTIs) and to define related terminology. Individual contributors/writers/authors will be acknowledged in a dedicated Acknowledgement/ Contributors Section. This will be a joint publication with AUGS. Support from IUGA staff will be provided.

The paper will define Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and include their diagnostic criteria. It will cover asymptomatic bacteriuria and pyuria, and differentiate between uncomplicated and complicated UTIs, considering associated risk factors. Additionally, the paper will address the distinctions between recurrent UTIs and reinfections and consider the classification of urosepsis and pyelonephritis within upper UTIs.

It will also differentiate UTI from other diagnoses, establish recommendation of diagnostic tests and investigations, review and recommend the up-to-date treatment options.

The writing group may advise other entities within either society to develop companion pieces specifically written for patients to assist them with understanding the treatment they will be receiving.

Background

“Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are a severe public health problem creating a significant societal and personal burden. According to epidemiological survey data approximately one out of every three women will have experienced a diagnosed and treated urinary tract infection (UTI) by the time they reach 24 years of age. Furthermore, it is estimated that over half of all women will be affected by a UTI at some point in their lifetime1. Approximately 20% to 30% of women who develop a UTI will have a recurrence2”.

Aim

To develop a joint terminology report of the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) / American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) describing Urinary Tract Infections in women.

Duration

This document requires a significant review of the up-to-date evidence. The length of the project should be 12-18 months.

Applicants should fulfill the following criteria

  • Have clinical expertise in treating female patients with UTI
  • Must be current members of IUGA
